The Houston Rodeo (The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo or HLSR) is renowned for its vibrant blend of thrilling rodeo events and world-class musical performances. Held at NRG Stadium, the rodeo sought to redefine entertainment for its audience by creating a seamless transition between the rodeo events and the post-event concert. With over ~70,000 attendees each night, the challenge was to keep the energy alive and the crowd engaged without a lull.

To reinvent the experience in a way that celebrated the excitement levels to date would be difficult, but with Smartstage's decades of experience in large and exciting custom projects, we were able to amp up the crowd experience to new levels... literally. Enter the all-aluminum 40-foot turntable stage, equipped with built-in motors, lights, and smoke effects, designed and executed to perfection. This stage, lowered while spinning and shooting smoke and pyrotechnics as the band played on it, gently landed into and on the already massive 60' x 40' rectangular stage in the round below.

Challenge.

The Houston Rodeo’s organizers were looking for innovative ways to keep the audience captivated after the last bull left the ring. They wanted a show-stopping spectacle that would instantly grab attention and maintain the party atmosphere, create a flawless transition from rodeo to music without losing audience energy, utilize an in-the-round design for 360-degree visibility, and incorporate advanced stage technology for dynamic visual and audio effects.

Solution.

Smartstage developed a modular staging solution designed specifically for large-scale, high-traffic events. The system provided a stable, durable platform capable of supporting presenters, performers, and production equipment throughout the rodeo’s extensive schedule. The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, renowned for showcasing world-class beach volleyball talent, embarked on an annual 25-beach national tour. Challenge.

AVP Pro Beach Volleyball required a seating system that was not only comfortable for fans but also rugged enough to withstand the unique conditions of outdoor beach venues. The system needed to be easily transportable, as each of the 25 tour stops featured different beach terrains and environmental challenges. Additionally, AVP needed a system that could be quickly set up and disassembled between events without impacting their tight schedule.

Solution.

Smartstage engineered a modular, 6,000-seat portable bleacher system designed specifically for AVP's unique needs. Transported in 12 trailers, this system was easy to install and strike, allowing the AVP tour to keep up with its demanding schedule while providing a comfortable and secure experience for volleyball fans. At the high-profile MJBizCon 2024 in the bustling Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) , SmartStage delivered innovative exhibit solutions tailored for the high-end cannabis industry . The conference , a premier event for cannabis professionals , provided an opportunity for Smartstage to showcase its expertise in creating structurally rugged and visually stunning business / tradeshow booth setups, exemplifying our commitment to excellence in innovation.

Our team was tasked with designing a 20 x 20 truss booth with a sleek silver aesthetic. Utilizing over 200 feet of 12 inch silver aluminum truss (an uncommon find in Las Vegas and one we keep readily available and in abundance), we overcame logistical and design challenges. We leveraged our unique and proprietary Truss Grapple product , which played a pivotal role in achieving rigging points that would have otherwise been inaccessible. This, coupled with our expertise and readiness, meant a flawless setup while maintaining a polished and professional brand appearance.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

CHALLENGE: Our client needed a visually stunning yet highly functional booth for MJBizCon 2024 at the LV Convention Center (LVCC) in the heart of Las Vegas , Nevada . The design had to accommodate LED grow lights , large / heavy power banks , and transformers while overcoming logistical hurdles like inaccessible rigging points and limited availability of 1 2 in silver / aluminum truss (something that's hard to come by in the area).

SOLUTION: Smartstage stepped in with a 20'x20' truss booth design using 200 feet of 12" silver truss, readily available from our local stock. Leveraging our proprietary Truss Grapple, we achieved otherwise unreachable rigging points with ease and creative freedom. The polished, professional look complemented the client’s needs, creating a space that showcased their cutting-edge products.

DELIVERY: B eyond the truss setup, Smartstage took on a production management role, handling trucking, lighting, and labor coordination while answering the client’s many questions. This year, Honda Motor 's brand team wanted to highlight their sporty yet sensible lineup of electric car concepts , demonstrating not one, but two near-product-ready designs. First, their Space-Hub passenger transport concept... sleek, yet roomy and spacious, suitable for families. Second, their Saloon ... a sporty answer to the EV lifestyle... stylish and elegant, powerful and stunning. With Smartstage's logistics team, Honda was able to lock down two 6 meter (19 foot) revolving turntable stages for CES. While we have a wide range of heavy-duty revolving stages on hand, their team wanted a custom, low-profile 24" high platform and we were happy to make that vision come to life for the convention.

Their pair of custom revolves came complete with data slip rings, DMX (and wireless) control , onboard power, and sub-9 cabling. Formula 1 kicked off into high gear

Formula 1 's Las Vegas racing event in downtown Las Vegas brought fast cars, a new venue, and a wealth of opportunity for the entertainment community to come together to help host this amazing event. The Platinum Hotel & Spa was no exception, and together with Smartstage's portable stage rentals , onlookers got a view like no other in the city. The Platinum Hotel team wanted a special experience for their guests, and the longest straight run of the track was indeed best viewed from the rooftop of the hotel. Converting the rooftop space to a venue in itself is where Smartstage stepped up to help.

Truss Grapples are one of the most versatile and durable telehandler attachment connections available on the market, and have a number of purposes in a diverse range of industries. For example, truss grapples have applications in construction, landscaping, agriculture, and council or municipal work. It’s evident that to make the most of your heavy machinery, a truss grapple is an invaluable piece of equipment to have. However, not all truss grapples are created equal.

The lighting truss grapples manufactured by us are designed with ultimate functionality in mind.

Typically, trust grapples are constructed from a single piece of aluminum, and this is then machined and shaped to wrap around the truss chords. The primary problem with this method is that it limits the point of connection to a singular truss stick due to the diagonal formation of the truss ladder – so when two solid aluminum grapples are placed together, they hit these diagonal members. In many ways, this defeats or at least limits the entire purpose of having a grapple, which is meant to provide for as many connection points on a truss as possible.

A truss grapple is a convenient alternative to using corner blocks for connecting truss rods. A corner block limits the truss connection to the ends, whereas a grapple is meant to enable a greater amount of connection points. Our truss grapples, however, suffer from no such limitations. Unlike others produced by other manufacturers, ours can be connected from literally anywhere.

Smartstage Innovation: Quality Control

Smartstage Truss Manufacturing Quality Control

The overall scope of truss (lighting truss, light truss or box truss) test procedure is to make sure with 100% certainty all truss sections will perform under certified load conditions in service.

Procedure to be performed with a combined effort of three companies;

Smartstage alloy testing team
Smartstage manufacturing team
Smartstage engineering team

The alloy is to be chemically analyzed by batch, for alloy and temper to make sure it conforms to 6061T6. Test reports for each test are to be documented and forwarded to Smartstage via SGS for audit. There are FOUR shapes with the current production run being manufactured at SGS, which means FOUR alloy tests and FOUR temper tests.
Weld penetration verification on the floor at SGS. SGS is to designate welding “Supervisor”, holding SCWI certification under the AWS designation. This is the most important point of quality assurance. SCWI will visually verify full penetration on the weld by each welder. If this is done correctly, then all testing beyond this will pass.

Welders must be certified under the AWS designation for TIG welding, and pass the test of SGS for the quality of weld before welding the truss. Certification documents must be available for request by Smartstage or a designated authority.

A dye penetrant test will be a secondary verification to weld inspectesting, testing one truss section of every 25. It is a very simple test.
A load test must be performed on every 25th truss. The load test is as earlier performed, see the photo below. Truss bolted to beam with a SUSPENDED load of 423 lbs (193KG) for 5 minutes, gradually applied. This load will vary based on the length of the truss being manufactured.
