When Metallica embarked on their ambitious world tour, they needed more than just a standard stage—they needed a custom, fast-build solution to keep up with the demanding schedule of back-to-back performances. Smartstage was brought on board to deliver a rugged, portable stage system that could handle the band’s high-energy shows and need for seamless transitions between cities. Each venue posed unique challenges, from varying terrain to tight deadlines, all of which demanded an adaptable and reliable solution.
Challenge.
With a grueling tour schedule, Metallica needed a truss system that could be set up and taken down quickly while providing the durability to withstand constant travel and high-impact performances. The staging also had to support heavy lighting rigs and sound equipment, as well as provide ample space for the band's intense on-stage presence. Achieving this within tight time constraints while maintaining the quality of every performance was a key challenge.
Solution.
Smartstage developed a solution specifically for Metallica's needs. The custom 60' x 80' stage and 60' x 80' roof provided a durable platform for the band’s performances, while the lowering roof system allowed for quick assembly and disassembly, so that the crew could leapfrog builds between cities. These stages were designed to handle the rigors of a multi-city tour, from heavy equipment loads to rapid setups, helping the tour stay on track without any delays.

Smartstage’s custom solution empowered Metallica to maintain their intense tour schedule, moving from city to city with minimal downtime. With a crew of 60-80 members and 12 supervisors, the staging was always ready. From legendary events like Woodstock to stadiums across the world, Smartstage’s
